LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. It’s UK legislation that sets out the legal requirements for the safe use of lifting equipment, including cranes, hoists, forklifts, passenger lifts, and other lifting machinery.
LOLER applies to all lifting equipment and lifting accessories used at work. This covers a wide range of machinery and devices such as cranes, hoists, forklift trucks, passenger and goods lifts, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), and vehicle tail lifts. It also includes the accessories used with them, for example chains, ropes, slings, shackles, eyebolts, lifting frames, and spreader beams. In simple terms, if equipment is used to lift, lower, or move a load, LOLER is likely to apply.
The frequency of LOLER inspections depends on the type of equipment and how it is used. In most cases, lifting equipment used to lift people must be thoroughly examined at least every six months, while other lifting equipment and accessories must be examined at least every twelve months.
If equipment is exposed to conditions that may cause deterioration, or if it is being used more intensively, inspections may need to be carried out more frequently.
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 are a set of UK health and safety regulations that place duties on businesses and employers who own, operate, or control lifting equipment.
The regulations require that lifting operations are properly planned, supervised, and carried out safely, and that all lifting equipment is fit for purpose, appropriately marked, and subject to regular thorough examinations. LOLER is designed to protect both employees and the public by ensuring that lifting equipment and activities are carried out safely and responsibly.
